Next stop: Singapore. RunOut joined gamescom asia 2023, putting WakaStudio in the middle of a growing meeting point between Asian game development and the global games industry.
Taking RunOut Around Southeast Asia
A few months after Shanghai, RunOut was back on the road.
This time, WakaStudio headed to Singapore for gamescom asia 2023, held at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre from October 19–22.
The 2023 edition welcomed more than 34,000 visitors, 136 exhibitors, and participants representing dozens of countries, while also introducing its first physical Entertainment Zone for players. Visit Singapore
That combination made it an interesting event for us.
There were players discovering new games on one side and developers, publishers, and industry professionals making connections on the other.
RunOut got to stand somewhere in between.
Built to Be Played Together
RunOut is at its best when several people are sharing the same screen of chaos.
A race may begin with everyone focused on the course, but things rarely stay polite for long.
Players start looking for shortcuts.
Someone mistimes a jump.
Two people arrive at the same platform.
And suddenly finishing the level becomes only half the problem.
Events like gamescom asia gave us a chance to see those interactions happen naturally with people who had never touched the game before.
No tutorial from a developer sitting beside them.
No context from months of internal testing.
Just the game and the player.
That is a very useful test.
Connecting Beyond the Booth
Gamescom Asia was also about meeting the wider development community.
For a studio from Thailand, having regional events that connect Southeast Asian developers with the international industry creates opportunities that go far beyond a single weekend of demos.
We came to Singapore with RunOut.
We returned with feedback, conversations, and plenty of ideas about where the game should run next.
Thankfully, unlike the characters in RunOut, the team managed to leave Singapore without being pushed off anything.
