RunOut traveled to gamescom 2023 in Cologne, giving WakaStudio an early opportunity to present the project within one of the world’s largest gaming events.
On August 23–27, 2023, WakaStudio brought RunOut to gamescom in Cologne, Germany.
For a small studio, arriving at an event on that scale creates a very specific feeling: excitement, inspiration, and the sudden realization that an enormous number of people also spend their working lives arguing about tiny game-design details.
It was a good place for RunOut to be.
At that stage, RunOut was already built around the same idea that continues to define it: a party platformer that is easy to understand, quick to play, and unpredictable enough to create a new story every round.
Run through the course.
Avoid obstacles.
Compete with everyone else.
Reach the objective.
Then add several other players with exactly the same plan.
That is where the trouble begins.
gamescom gave us an early opportunity to see how RunOut communicated itself in a huge international environment. At an event filled with games from studios of every size, a project needs to show its personality quickly.
For RunOut, that meant colorful characters, readable movement, fast rounds, and multiplayer chaos.
The event also gave us a wider look at the indie scene. Seeing so many different visual styles, mechanics, and strange-but-brilliant ideas in one place was a reminder that there is never only one way to make something fun.
Cologne became one of RunOut’s early international milestones, followed by trips to Tokyo, Taipei, San Francisco, Boston, Helsinki, and more.
Every stop taught us something different.
gamescom showed us just how far a small project from Bangkok could travel.
