RunOut at PAX East 2024: Bringing the Chaos to Boston

RunOut made its way to Boston for PAX East on March 21–24, 2024, bringing fast-paced party platforming, competitive chaos, and plenty of unexpected moments to a new audience.

PAX East 2024 gave WakaStudio another chance to take RunOut beyond our development screens and put it directly in front of players.

For a game built around quick reactions, competition, unpredictable movement, and the occasional betrayal near the edge of a platform, a live event is one of the best tests we can ask for. Players do not know which mechanic took weeks to tune. They simply pick up the game and decide whether it is fun.

RunOut is an online party platformer built around short, energetic matches. Players race through obstacle-filled stages, compete with one another, survive the chaos, and try to reach the objective before everyone else.

The rules are simple. The journey to the finish line usually is not.

Taking RunOut to Boston was not only about showing the game. It was also about watching how new players understood it without help from the development team.

Some focused immediately on winning. Others quickly discovered that interfering with their friends could be just as entertaining. Every match created a different story, from last-second comebacks to completely avoidable disasters.

Those reactions matter. A route that feels obvious after months of development may confuse a first-time player. A small mechanic may unexpectedly become someone’s favorite part of the game. And players will always find at least one thing the team never predicted.

PAX East also reminded us why we enjoy bringing our games to events. Seeing RunOut surrounded by other indie projects, developers, and players makes the project feel much bigger than something built inside our studio in Bangkok.

The event ended, but the lessons came home with us.

For RunOut, the goal remains simple: make every match clear, fast, unpredictable, and fun enough that losing immediately leads to the sentence, “One more round.”
